If you were able to take a time machine back to, say, the mid-20th Century, you would be likely to see cars stranded at the roadside with steam pouring from the engines. Blown radiator hoses and thermostats were probably the reason. It was a fairly common occurrence and most drivers experienced it at least once.
One good thing about modern day technology is that cars today are more reliable than ever. The days of seeing stricken motors at the side of the road, billowing steam, are long gone. No technology is perfect however and from time to time even the best vehicles can let us down. Modern Car Faults One
